Pretest Driving Lessons and Parking Only Lessons

Pretest driving lessons are test-focused driving lessons and lead to greater car wear due to repeated manoeuvres. A one-hour lesson includes two reverse parallel parks, two 3-point turns, and two or more kerbside stops, shopping centre type parking, nose first parking depending on test centre requirements and time limitations. Learn more about our Pretest lessons from this link.  Pretest Lessons Information

Other test criteria are covered briefly, but a single hour is insufficient for all requirements; additional or longer sessions may be necessary. These lessons cost more than standard driving lessons and higher skill is required. Not for new drivers.

Lesson Options

We offer specialised parking-only lessons for those who wish to improve their parking skills, as well as comprehensive pretest driving lessons aimed at candidates preparing for their driving test.

Lesson Costs and Suitability

These lessons are priced higher to reflect increased wear and tear on our vehicles and the advanced skill requirements involved. They are not intended for beginner drivers.

NOTE:
All packages are valid for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase and should be used within that time.
Normal package or single lessons do not provide driving test information. These are logbook/learning to drive focus leassons.

Active Engagement with Preparation Materials

During driving lessons, we regularly ask students whether they have been reading up on road rules, road users handbook, doing the knowledge test. Engaging with these resources is essential for building a strong foundation of knowledge.

The Importance of Prioritising Driving Education

Both students and parents need to understand that mastering safe and competent driving is at least as important, if not more so, than traditional school subjects. Driving is a higher risk activity, and the consequences of inadequate preparation can be far more serious. For this reason, it is essential to dedicate ample time and focus to learning how to drive correctly. By investing the necessary effort into developing proper driving skills, learners can become safe, confident, and capable drivers who are well equipped to handle the complexities of the road.

Failing to practise adequately can prevent students from reaching their full potential behind the wheel. Aim for frequent, high-quality practice sessions and try to experience a variety of driving conditions to build well-rounded skills.

Comparing School Attendance and Driving Practice

Consider how many days each week you attend school. For most students, school is an activity that occurs nearly every weekday, providing consistent and structured learning.

Now, reflect on how many days a week you dedicate to driving practice. Is your approach to learning to drive as regular and committed as your approach to school?

Between the two activities, which is more dangerous? Driving involves risks and requires careful preparation to ensure safety on the road.

Without regular practice, it is impossible to gain the experience needed to drive safely and confidently. No practice means no experience, which can compromise your ability to handle real-world driving situations.

Avoiding Narrow Learning

Many students tend to drive up and down the same roads repeatedly, which results in “narrow learning”. This limited approach can restrict your exposure to the variety of scenarios you’ll encounter while driving. To gain broader knowledge and skill, it’s important to take different routes during practice sessions. Incorporate various road types and features such as intersections, roundabouts, and traffic lights into your driving routine. By practising what you are not yet confident with, you’ll build greater experience and capability as a driver.

Lesson Areas

For students who live outside the RMS training and RMS testing areas, we suggest you do 90-minute lessons as travelling to and from training/testing areas reduces valuable lesson time in training/testing areas. In some areas
90 minute and 120 min lessons are available upon request.

All lessons, packages, and driving tests must be prepaid.
See our T’s & C’s for further information.

For the correct advice and information, the first time, contact Penrith Driving School.

Automatic Packages

Packages are available in 3, 5 lessons and 10 lessons.
Used as an introduction to learning the basics for learners or improving your driving for those with some experience.
All packaged lessons can be used as either 60 minute or 90-minute lessons to the total amount of lesson time available in the package.
Suitable for new students without any driving experience or those wanting to learn how to drive better.
Lessons should be frequent to keep the flow of knowledge so at least 2 lessons per week should be your goal.

NOTE:
All packages and lessons are valid for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase and should be used within that time.

RMS Driving Test

The RMS provides the learning requirements which we teach to students so they learn the correct process as per the RMS guidelines.
The requirements are shown to the students so they know what they need to show the RMS assessor during the driving test so if you are preparing for your driving test ensure you give yourself enough time prior to the driving test to be prepared properly.

RMS Assessors

If you didn’t know when you go for a driving test the expectation of an RMS accessor is that you’re able to drive safely, have vehicle control, be able to respond to hazards and have a good understanding of the road rules. They expect you to be able to follow their directions like turn left, turn right and perform the maneuvers as requested. If you still require assistance when driving you need more practice. The RMS Assessors do not help you drive so you need to drive independently for a driving test.

Are you Ready?

Quite often we have students coming to us wanting to do just a couple of driving lessons prior to their driving test as they think they are ready but they struggle to show us they can drive correctly and independently to pass a driving test usually because they do not practice enough. Driving is serious so be properly prepared.

RMS Criteria

You should remember that the RMS Driving Test is based on the “Guide to the Driving Test” not whether you can drive a vehicle. How you drive it during must be to testing criteria not how you may have been driving. One reason students continually struggle is they are inexperienced and can end up failing as they aren’t properly prepared. We can only instruct you on what is the correct way to meet the RMS Test Criteria. If you can drive properly by yourself then you should pass a driving test without any problem.

Manual Lesson Packages

Learning to drive a manual properly is much more complex than just getting into a car and changing gears. Teaching requires more techniques and skill from the instructor with lots of quality practice by the student. Learning how to select the correct gears, learning to understand how a car responds in different situations. Being able to listen and feel your car is a requirement that needs to be learnt. It takes time to comprehend and process the information and it only comes with practice and repetition. Skip the basics and you only cheat yourself.

Learning is a Process

For new learners just starting out learning a manual vehicle the process. It can be a lot of information to take in but everything is a process. The process is built up over time until basic requirements and coordination are more consistent when learning the “friction point” for moving off. You also have to able to stop correctly, learning to steer correctly and shift gears properly. This is not learned in a few lessons and takes repetition and practice.

Learn to Drive Properly

Being able to drive a manual vehicle is one thing, driving a manual vehicle correctly is another. Only buy these lessons if you want to be taught properly to the RMS testing standards and that starts with the first lesson. It does involve theory as you need to understand what you are trying to do. It’s not just getting in the car and driving. You must learn to feel the vehicle and listen to the vehicle when driving and this takes time. Good hand and leg coordination are also required.

Controlling the Vehicle

Learning the limitations of a vehicle can help with vehicle control and if you don’t know how to do this you will struggle with proper vehicle control. It is very common when students come to us they struggle with good vehicle control. Learning about vehicle dynamics is discussed and the importance of being in control and being able to respond to a hazard. After students start to understand they improve their driving by knowing what the car can and can’t do and how they can do this.

Experience

Students may be able to drive a manual vehicle but it may not be good enough to pass the RMS driving test as the licence testing requirements are much stricter. Too often we have students that do not have enough experience where it counts.
Learning to drive properly doesn’t happen overnight because muscle memory requires time to learn the correct coordination and being able to multitask in order to operate vehicle controls effectively whilst gaining the confidence needed to become a safer and better driver.

Driving Test Requirements

The RMS has Driving Test requirements which students need to be to show during the driving test so students need to learn the correct process as per the RMS guidelines. The requirements are shown to the students so they know what they need to show the RMS assessor during the driving test. If you are preparing for your driving test and considering manual driving lessons ensure you give yourself enough time prior to the driving test to be prepared properly.

Meeting the Requirements

If you didn’t know when you go for a driving test the expectation of an RMS accessor is that you’re able to drive independently.
You must have good vehicle control and be able to respond to hazards. Understand the road rules. They expect you to be able to follow their directions like turn left, turn right and perform the manoeuvres as requested.
If you are still requiring assistance when driving you need more practice and you will fail the driving test.

RMS Criteria

The RMS Driving Test is based on the “Guide to the Driving Test” not whether you can drive a manual vehicle.
How you drive a vehicle during the Driving Test is dependent on how much practice you have had and your ability to meet the testing criteria. People continually struggle and can end up failing as they aren’t properly prepared and didn’t bother to practice. We can only instruct you on what is the correct way to meet the RMS Test Criteria. If you can drive properly then you should pass a driving test without any problem.
